The Organisation

One child becomes blind every minute, one adult every 5 seconds. Yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable.

The OPC (Organisation pour la Prévention de la Cécité - Organisation for the Prevention of Blindness) is an international NGO with specific expertise in ocular public health. It fights to preserve the sight of as many people as possible in the most deprived populations in French-speaking developing countries.

The OPC works with individuals, health authorities and universities of the countries in which it operates. Training is at the heart of its actions : this involves sharing knowledge, expertise and medical technologies, adapted to local conditions, in order to achieve an autonomous operation of the structures that are set up.

Thanks to the OPC, millions of people will not lose their sight or have had it recovered, enabling them to continue their social and professional lives while remaining independent and autonomous.

Its history

The OPC was set up in 1978 under the guidance of Mr Christian MONNIER, Mr Pierre AUBE and Professor André DUBOIS-POULSEN.
