Save a Child’s Sight for Christmas

*Give the gift of sight this Christmas !

This Christmas, give children with eye problems a future.
Each year, 1.5 million children in the world become blind, yet 80% of visual problems are easily preventable with an inexpensive treatment. Tens of millions of other children suffer from uncorrected visual problems which hamper a normal education and condemn them to misery.
The only French charity established in several African francophone countries, the OPC is particularly concerned in preserving the sight of the youngest children.

In the run up to Christmas, we all look for presents to make small children happy. At this festive and symbolic time, we would like to let you know about OPC projects made possible by the generosity of our donors to preserve the sight of young children :

  • In Chad and in the Central African Republic more than 900,000 children and adults will benefit from February 2014 onwards from a treatment for trachoma, the blinding illness which is the most widespread in the world.
  • The protection of more than 50,000 newborns from neonatal purulent conjunctivitis has been put in place. This disease can blind and sometimes even kill a baby in the days after birth.
  • The attempt to eliminate the widespread river blindness in the Congo, as we have already done in Mali, Guinea and Senegal. This project will take place over a five year period.

You may see from this that your support is well used for the preservation of the sight and life of children. This is why we are asking you to give your support to a particular project in 2014 :
refractive problems (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism).
These constitute the main cause of visual deficiencies in children between the ages of 5 and 15. Left untreated, they often harm a child’s education and condemn the child to social ostracism.

The OPC has thus decided to include the screening and correction of vision defects in its projects in Guinea and Niger, creating and equipping two optical centers (which comprise a spectacle workshop and a shop). Our target : by 2014 to test the view of 70,000 students and give 7,000-9,000 of them access to appropriate glasses at an affordable price. This would be calculated based on the income of each family.

[ This is why, in the run up to Christmas, we ask you to offer a vital present to these children whose sight is threatened. For example, with a gift of :
- €75 would help equip an optical center to supply spectacles adapted to those who suffer from visual deficiencies
- €50 pays for the treatment of 50 children against trachoma.
- €38 would pay for the preventative treatment of neonatal purulent conjunctivitis for 1,000 newborns. ]

Your support, in this symbolic time, is a gesture of great significance, which will allow us to save sight and give the gift of a new future to some of the most impoverished families in the world.

*We thank you very much and wish you a very happy Christmas period with those you love !
