Trachoma is an infectious disease which causes irreversible blindness. It blinds someone every 15 seconds. Around 84 million cases of active trachoma require treatment to prevent imminent blindness. The OPC is active in its duties as an official partner of the World Health Organization, and as a memeber of The Alliance for the Global Elimination of Blinding Trachoma by the year 2020 (GET 2020), and is also a member of the ICTC (International Coalition for Trachoma Control).
The OPC is involved in the National Programmes for the Fight against Trachoma in Chad and the CAR which have now been finalised.
On the 28th and 29th June, the Chad and CAR projects will be presented to the TEC (ITI PFIZER).
(1) The international efforts to eliminate blinding trachoma are based on a strategy recommended by the WHO, known by the acronym SAFE. It depends upon surgery for trichiasis (S), antibiotics (A), facial cleanliness (F) and environmental improvement (E). These steps are aimed at the community and seek community involvement in the primary health care approach.
The antibiotic used, Azithromycine, is an antibiotic with long-lasting results which is already used in countries approaching the final phase of eliminating blinding trachoma.
