Work continues as normal for the OPC team in Mali

Work continues as normal for our staff, colleagues and friends out in Mali. Recent events facing the country have not affected our programmes.
Ophthalmologic consultations, as well as operations carried out in hospitals and by the mobile teams in 4x4 cars (“UMCO” – Mobile Ocular Surgery Unit), continue as normal in the three health districts in which the OPC operates : Kayes, Sikasso and Mopti.

Some results from the year 2012 in Mali (01/01/2012 to 17/11/2012) :

Ophthalmologic Consultations :

- 14,118 consultations in the Kayes hospital ;
- 5,981 consultations in the Sikasso hospital ;
- 4,032 consultations in the Mopti hospital.

Cataracts operated on :

- 1,714 cataracts in the Mopti health district, 319 of which were achieved thanks to the mobile teams ;
- 841 cataracts in the Sikasso health district, 235 of which were achieved thanks to the mobile teams ;
- 229 cataracts in the Mopti health district.

Other surgical procedures undertaken :

- 52 trichiasis operations ;
- 25 glaucoma operations ;
- 373 other small interventions.
